Matthew N.K. Smith is the Principal Data Scientist at the City of Boston. Working with the Department of Innovation and Technology, he brings an experimental, research-oriented perspective to his data science work, drawing on experience in both particle physics and conservation policy. He holds a PhD in physics from Columbia University. At the City of Boston Matt collaborates with many departments, from Transportation to Housing to Public Health, on projects involving predictive modeling or deeper analytics. He founded the city's Ethical Data Working Group, and has helped lead Boston's effort toward better data transparency, accountability, and access, particularly in AI and automated decision-making. Matt loves city cycling, and you will often find him pedaling along Boston's Southwest Corridor park.
